Get Organized with a Kitchen Cart

January 30th, 2012

Home Styles Kitchen Island in Black

Many homeowners today are crunched for cash and putting off expensive kitchen renovations. But when you are faced with a kitchen that is unruly or just too small there are economical ways that you can improve upon your existing space. One great way to do this is by increasing your storage capacity with a kitchen cart.

Linon Granite Top Kitchen Cart in Wenge Finish

A kitchen cart can fill a multitude of uses. A larger kitchen cart can be used instead of a kitchen island. A small one can be wheeled from place to place and can hold a variety of kitchen supplies and appliances. Some kitchen carts have extra storage features such as towel holders or wine racks. If you need to stash your microwave, there are also carts designed to do just that.

Choose an option with a breakfast bar to gain additional seating as well as added storage in your kitchen. Or try out a kitchen cart with cabinet doors to hide away your things or try open shelves for easy access.

Cozy Up to a New Fireplace This Winter

January 27th, 2012

Southern Enterprises Stainless Steel Wall Mount Fireplace

February is almost here! The shortest month of the year is also one of the coldest. Plus it’s also time for the most romantic day of the year: Valentine’s Day. What could be a better time of year to purchase a new fireplace for your home?

Southern Enterprises Portable Indoor Outdoor Fireplace

Installing a fireplace no longer needs to be a complicated procedure. Try a gel fueled fireplace. These fireplaces have a real crackling flame but they also emit very little heat. They are ventless and do not require a power source which means they can be placed almost anywhere. It’s all up to you and your imagination.

Dimplex Fieldstone Freestanding Rustic Electric Fireplace

An electric fireplace is another great option. Electric fireplaces also offer versatility that regular fireplaces can’t. They can easily be put in places like condos or townhouses with little to no installation costs. Some of these types of fireplaces can even be wall-mounted or recessed into a wall for a floating look. These fireplaces offer more heat than gel-fueled varieties but not as much as gas.

These days even a fireplace can do double duty. Try picking one with built-in storage. Some fireplaces also offer a place to stand your flat-screen TV as well as built-in compartments for your components.

The Crashed Ferrari Coffee Table

January 26th, 2012

You might think you have seen it everything in the world of coffee tables, but you probably haven’t seen anything like this. French artist Charly Molinelli was recently approached by an ultra-high end client to fabricate a coffee table that can only be described as unique. Think of this as a recycling project of sorts. One man’s very expensive trash becomes another man’s treasure.

The piece was formed from the wreckage of a crashed Ferrari, which was reduced to cube form at a salvage yard. The piece was then encased in a recycled wood box with a glass top. A crashed Ferrari does not come along every day however and the client demanded approval over the final chosen car. It’s rumored that the crashed Ferrari was purchased for somewhere in the neighborhood of $15,600 but there’s no word on what the finished piece is worth.

If the price or the concept makes your stomach flip, there’s no problem. There are a number of coffee tables available that will make your living room stand out but in a less macabre sort of way.

Stanley Coastal Living Storage Cocktail Table

Try out a bright red coffee table. This is the perfect choice for those with traditional style who aren’t afraid to be bold. The bright color is sure to make a statement but its charming country inspired styling keeps it from being too overwhelming. This would make a particularly nice accent in a mostly blue or grey room with seaside inspired design.

Zuo Discovery Table

Sculpted glass is always eye catching. This curvy table has frosted glass accents and a curved glass dip detail which really make it stand out. This is a great look to try in a very contemporary space. It would work especially well over a brightly patterned or colorful rug.

Or go sleek with a contemporary with a square glass coffee table with java wood accents. Its unusual shape and form is a great way to get that urban loft look in your space. Plus its simple lines mean that works well with a number of décor styles, from contemporary to transitional.

There are many easy ways to be distinctive with today’s coffee tables.

Don’t Forget Audio Racks

January 19th, 2012

The TV stand does not have to be the end all and be all. If you are shopping for entertainment furniture, have you considered getting a audio rack? Don’t neglect audio racks and stands, especially if you are an audio equipment enthusiast. They provide the necessary shelf space to house your stereos (it’s also called a stereo rack), amplifiers, and CD and DVD players. If your sound system deserves to be showcased, audio racks are available in a lot of designs and configurations that would complement your other furnishings. Here are a few of our picks:

This Tech Craft audio stand from the Veneto series is a great choice. It is moderately sized and comes in a black finish that is easy to match with other furniture.

There are plenty of attractive finishes aside from black. Check out this Home Styles Cabana Banana audio cabinet. The color and texture makes it stand out from other racks.

If you are looking for a glass audio rack, don’t forget to look at VTI. Their audio racks have a solid build and can handle a lot of weight.

Freshen Up This January

January 16th, 2012

Now that the holidays are over, it’s the perfect time to think about freshening up your home. Purchasing a new piece of furniture is a great way to accomplish that. Look around your home and consider what needs to be replaced. Perhaps it’s that hand-me-down coffee table or the bookcase you’ve had since college. Whatever you are looking for, this years fresh new furniture looks will have something to take your home from drab to fab.

Does your master bedroom need some attention? Consider a gorgeous mirrored nightstand in the glamorous Hollywood Regency style. Or perhaps a modern nightstand with drawers in an ebony finish with sleek satin chrome pulls is more suitable for your space.

Is it time to refresh your guest room? Consider a trundle daybed in a sophisticated espresso finish. Or for a totally different look try a metal daybed with a chic and striking circular motif. A trundle daybed offers the choice of extra storage space or extra sleeping space if you choose a pop-up trundle.

Maybe it’s your living room that needs a little work. A round coffee table in trendy zebrawood with integrated shelves adds both storage and style. Or go for a dramatic sculpted glass coffee table that looks like a fine piece of art. A coffee table is a great place to make a statement and stand out, while still being functional.

If you are one of those lucky people who received a new flat screen TV over the holidays, you will probably be in the market for a new TV stand. If space is at a premium try a corner TV stand with loads of built-in storage. Or try a large 60 inch TV stand for your large TV or plasma.

Or perhaps your kitchen has become out of control. Get the look of a built-in island without remodeling with an island kitchen cart. Clear up some cabinet space by storing your excess away behind cabinet doors.

There’s no better way to start the new year than by giving your home a mini-makeover.

What’s worse than the Tokidoki Barbie?

October 28th, 2011

Have you heard about the Tokidoki Barbie?

Tokidoki doll

Designed by the LA fashion group of the same name, the edgy new collector’s item from Mattel sports a bright pink bob and prominent neck and shoulder tattoos – and it’s causing quite a stir among parents. Despite the fact that the $50 doll is said to be aimed at adult buyers, guardians the world over fear that the loud new ‘toy’ is sending the wrong message to impressionable children.

We’re reserving out judgment on the doll, but it does remind us of some other truly strange children’s products that have crossed the FADI desk – and which are yet to catch the attention of concerned carers.

So in the spirit of Friday afternoon, here’s our guide to what not to buy your tots this holiday season.

The Baby Cage

The baby cage

This frightening wire contraption, which allowed inner city parents to store their children outside city windows, was patented in the US in 1922.

And we’ve heard of baby mobiles, but…

From Mommysentials: “The Babykeeper Basic is an infant carrier style seat, that hangs from the stall wall in most public restrooms, and can also be used in many public fitting rooms and locker rooms.”

Practical accent furniture

October 20th, 2011

Are you searching for that final, elegant touch for your living room or hallway? A stylish piece of accent furniture might be the exotic twist you’ve been searching for.

Accent pieces include everything from occasional chairs to console tables, kitchen carts to hat racks – furniture that adds a little extra flair, complementing the room and items surrounding it. That doesn’t mean accent furniture needs to be impractical, though. On the contrary, there are plenty of designs that are striking and useful.

Accent Tables

Accent tables look great, and are also useful as storage and display spaces. Consider the buffet table — decorative, until it becomes a serving space when you entertain.

Save space with a TV wall mount

October 18th, 2011

With compact condos popping up throughout cities all over the world, a new problem is confronting urban decorators – television sets are getting larger as living spaces shrink. It can turn the task of finding a dream TV and TV stand into a nightmare.

TV Mounts

The good news is that you are no longer limited to traditional TV cabinets. Wide-screen plasma TVs and flat-screens are now thin and light enough to be mounted on a wall, saving up to a couple of meters beneath the unit. TV mounts might free up room for a larger media storage cabinet, which could double as a display space for those difficult-to-place trinkets and family memories.

TV Wall Mount TV Bracket

Home Cinema

Sturdy TV brackets, which typically come in ready-to-install kits, can also transform your entertainment space into a sleek and inviting home theatre, as this handy home cinema pictorial at illustrates. Consider matching your mounted TV with comfy recliners and a dimmer switch to create an authentic theatre environment – you can almost taste the buttered popcorn!

Size Matters

Note that the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has set voluntary international standards for TV wall mounts, which usually determine whether you will need to purchase an additional adapter plate. You can pick these up anywhere that sells TV mount accessories.
